Secret Spokane is open to any filmmaker interested in creating an artful photograph and making a one-minute film with and about people in Spokane who are little known, integral to our community, or even would-be superheroes.
Check out this video to hear more about the project from one of the photographers who participated in Oakland, CA, JJ Harris. In Oakland, they called the project The Oakland Fence. Here, we’re calling it Secret Spokane.
The photograph and video could be of someone you find interesting and want to know more about, a family member, someone in your neighborhood, or a friend. Once you get permission from them to participate in the project, and they trust you, ask them questions about their lives, what they dream about, what they hope for the future. And listen to the answers.
One helpful prompt could be,
“How would you end the sentence: If you really knew me, you’d know… ____.”
We hope with this project that the person or people you are photographing know what you are doing, and get to “create” their picture with you. Remember, its cooler to make a picture WITH someone than to take a picture OF them. See if you can hang and talk to your subject before the camera is involved; talk about the different questions, see what the best angle might be, where the light is, what are they thinking about most deeply, what are they doing that brings them the most joy. Then make the picture and record the video. Maybe let them photograph you too — just for fun.
Remember, we want to share the stories of folks in Spokane who don’t usually get to tell their stories. That’s the secret.
This is an inclusive project and themes of ethnicity, race, religion, immigration, gender, or identity in general are especially welcome.
